This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Bunbury in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (3,321 people or 16.3%)
- Construction (2,149 people or 10.6%)
- Retail Trade (2,067 people or 10.2%)
In combination, these three industries employed 7,537 people in total or 37.0% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, Victoria Park employed 13.8% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 6.7% in Construction; and 7.9% in Retail Trade.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Bunbury and Victoria Park were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (8.2% compared to 3.6%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in construction (10.6% compared to 6.7%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (16.3% compared to 13.8%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (3.5% compared to 10.2%)

The number of employed people in Bunbury increased by 1,651 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Bunbury were for those employed in:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+769 persons)
- Mining (+367 persons)
- Accommodation and Food Services (+288 persons)
- Retail Trade (-190 persons)
