More Hillarys male residents worked in construction than any other industry in 2021.

This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Hillarys in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (2,332 males or 20.7%)
  • Mining (1,087 males or 9.7%)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (1,017 males or 9.0%)

In combination, these three industries employed 4,436 males in total or 39.4% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Thornlie employed 14.2% in Construction; 6.9% in Mining; and 4.8% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Hillarys and Thornlie were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in construction (20.7% compared to 14.2%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in professional, scientific and technical services (9.0% compared to 4.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in transport, postal and warehousing (4.1% compared to 11.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in manufacturing (5.5% compared to 10.4%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Hillarys increased by 668 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Hillarys were for those employed in:

  • Mining (+327 males)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+168 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+77 males)
  • Retail Trade (-67 males)
