This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Butler in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (3,857 people or 14.4%)
- Construction (3,241 people or 12.1%)
- Retail Trade (2,785 people or 10.4%)
In combination, these three industries employed 9,883 people in total or 36.8% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, Mount Lawley employed 14.5% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 7.1% in Construction; and 8.5% in Retail Trade.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Butler and Mount Lawley were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in construction (12.1% compared to 7.1%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in mining (8.8% compared to 5.3%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in retail trade (10.4% compared to 8.5%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (4.5% compared to 11.8%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed people in Butler increased by 15,090 between 2011 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2011 and 2021 in Butler were for those employed in:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+2,573 persons)
- Mining (+1,555 persons)
- Retail Trade (+1,500 persons)
- Construction (+1,412 persons)
