More Mining and Pastoral Region residents worked in mining than any other industry in 2021.

Mining and Pastoral Region's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Mining and Pastoral Region in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Mining (15,639 people or 23.6%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (6,450 people or 9.7%)
  • Education and Training (5,724 people or 8.6%)

In combination, these three industries employed 27,813 people in total or 41.9% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Kimberley employed 3.0% in Mining; 17.9% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 14.0% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Mining and Pastoral Region and Kimberley were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in mining (23.6% compared to 3.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (9.7% compared to 17.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (8.6% compared to 14.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in public administration and safety (6.5% compared to 9.5%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Mining and Pastoral Region decreased by 3,695 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Mining and Pastoral Region were for those employed in:

  • Mining (-1,588 persons)
  • Construction (-1,572 persons)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+980 persons)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (-650 persons)
