More Pilbara residents worked in mining than any other industry in 2021.

Pilbara's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Pilbara in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Mining (7,223 people or 30.4%)
  • Construction (2,076 people or 8.7%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (1,739 people or 7.3%)

In combination, these three industries employed 11,038 people in total or 46.5% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Regional WA employed 11.3% in Mining; 8.5% in Construction; and 11.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Pilbara and Regional WA were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in mining (30.4% compared to 11.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (0.6% compared to 9.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (7.3% compared to 11.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in retail trade (5.6% compared to 8.3%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Pilbara increased by 171 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Pilbara were for those employed in:

  • Mining (-889 persons)
  • Construction (+416 persons)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+377 persons)
  • Education and Training (+275 persons)
