More South West Region female residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

South West Region's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in South West Region in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (16,764 females or 22.5%)
  • Education and Training (10,211 females or 13.7%)
  • Retail Trade (9,760 females or 13.1%)

In combination, these three industries employed 36,735 females in total or 49.3% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, Regional WA employed 20.2% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 14.5% in Education and Training; and 11.3% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of South West Region and Regional WA were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (22.5% compared to 20.2%)
  • A larger percentage of females employed in retail trade (13.1% compared to 11.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (3.2% compared to 5.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in mining (2.5% compared to 4.4%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed females in South West Region increased by 10,361 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2016 and 2021 in South West Region were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+3,987 females)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+1,200 females)
  • Education and Training (+1,148 females)
  • Mining (+860 females)
