More Central Wheatbelt residents worked in agriculture, forestry and fishing than any other industry in 2021.

Central Wheatbelt's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Central Wheatbelt in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (3,714 people or 23.0%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (1,544 people or 9.6%)
  • Education and Training (1,324 people or 8.2%)

In combination, these three industries employed 6,582 people in total or 40.8% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Dawesville employed 0.8% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 13.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 9.2% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Central Wheatbelt and Dawesville were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (23.0% compared to 0.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in mining (6.6% compared to 11.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in construction (5.9% compared to 10.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (3.9% compared to 7.5%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Central Wheatbelt decreased by 226 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Central Wheatbelt were for those employed in:

  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (-129 persons)
  • Wholesale trade (+92 persons)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+87 persons)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+54 persons)
