Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in Kimberley in 2021 compared to Western Australia shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a similar proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 17.5% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 9.5% were one-parent families, compared with 30.2% and 10.0% respectively for Western Australia.

There were a lower proportion of lone person households and a lower proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 15.5% compared to 23.8% in Western Australia while the proportion of couples without children was 13.6% compared to 25.4% in Western Australia.

Emerging groups

The number of households in Kimberley increased by 1,051 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in Kimberley between 2016 and 2021 were:

  • Couples without children (-151 households)
  • One parent families (+140 households)
