In 2021, there were more Swahili speakers working as community and personal service workers in the City of Townsville than any other occupation.

The City of Townsville's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which people speaking a language other than English at home (who are residents) work. The work destination may be in the local area or elsewhere.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the Swahili speaking resident population in City of Townsville in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Community and Personal Service Workers (61 people or 35.7%)
  • Professionals (36 people or 21.1%)
  • Labourers (34 people or 19.9%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 131 people in total or 76.6% of the employed resident population.

In comparison, Regional QLD employed 32.6% in Community and Personal Service Workers; 25.2% in Professionals; and 19.0% in Labourers.

The major differences between the jobs held by the Swahili speaking population of the City of Townsville and Regional QLD were:

  • A larger percentage of people employed as Community and Personal Service Workers (35.7% compared to 32.6%)
  • A larger percentage of people employed as Clerical and Administrative Workers (5.8% compared to 3.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of people employed as Professionals (21.1% compared to 25.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of people employed as Managers (1.8% compared to 4.0%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed Swahili speakers in City of Townsville increased by 112 between 2016 and 2021.
