In 2021, the largest age group in the City of Sydney was 30 to 34 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 20 to 24 year olds, decreasing by 2,897 people.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the male five year age groups of the City of Sydney in 2021 compared to Redfern Street Village Area shows that there was a higher proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) and a lower proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 7.4% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 9.3% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 6.6% and 10.2% respectively for Redfern Street Village Area.
The major differences between the male age structure of the City of Sydney and Redfern Street Village Area were:
- A larger percentage of males aged 35 to 39 (11.6% compared to 9.6%)
- A larger percentage of males aged 30 to 34 (16.0% compared to 14.5%)
- A larger percentage of males aged 40 to 44 (8.1% compared to 6.8%)
- A smaller percentage of males aged 20 to 24 (9.3% compared to 13.2%)

From 2016 to 2021, City of Sydney's male population increased by 2,765 people (2.6%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.51% per year over the period.
The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:
