This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Cronulla in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Construction (1,259 people or 12.7%)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (1,195 people or 12.1%)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (1,024 people or 10.3%)
In combination, these three industries employed 3,478 people in total or 35.1% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, Grays Point employed 12.4% in Construction; 14.2% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 10.4% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Cronulla and Grays Point were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in transport, postal and warehousing (5.7% compared to 4.7%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (9.6% compared to 12.7%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (12.1% compared to 14.2%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed people in Cronulla decreased by 298 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Cronulla were for those employed in:
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+150 persons)
- Retail Trade (-147 persons)
- Transport, Postal and Warehousing (-146 persons)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+145 persons)
