Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in South Yarra in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (2,707 people or 19.5%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (1,672 people or 12.1%)
  • Retail Trade (1,140 people or 8.2%)

In combination, these three industries employed 5,519 people in total or 39.8% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, the City of Yarra employed 18.8% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; 13.9% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 7.5% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of South Yarra and the City of Yarra were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (7.8% compared to 5.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in public administration and safety (4.9% compared to 6.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (12.1% compared to 13.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (7.5% compared to 9.3%)
