Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in South Yarra in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (2,707 people or 19.5%)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (1,672 people or 12.1%)
- Retail Trade (1,140 people or 8.2%)
In combination, these three industries employed 5,519 people in total or 39.8% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, the City of Yarra employed 18.8% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; 13.9% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 7.5% in Retail Trade.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of South Yarra and the City of Yarra were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (7.8% compared to 5.9%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in public administration and safety (4.9% compared to 6.8%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (12.1% compared to 13.9%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (7.5% compared to 9.3%)

The number of employed people in South Yarra increased by 1,365 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in South Yarra were for those employed in:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+450 persons)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+364 persons)
- Construction (+207 persons)
- Public Administration and Safety (+176 persons)
