Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in South Gippsland Shire in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (1,370 males or 19.5%)
  • Construction (1,243 males or 17.7%)
  • Manufacturing (642 males or 9.1%)

In combination, these three industries employed 3,255 males in total or 46.4% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, the South West Coastal District employed 29.0% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 16.1% in Construction; and 3.3% in Manufacturing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of South Gippsland Shire and the South West Coastal District were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in manufacturing (9.1% compared to 3.3%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in transport, postal and warehousing (5.3% compared to 3.6%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in construction (17.7% compared to 16.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (19.5% compared to 29.0%)

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in South Gippsland Shire were for those employed in:

  • Construction (+227 males)
  • Education and Training (+82 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+72 males)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+65 males)
