This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Coastal South in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (166 people or 15.0%)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (124 people or 11.2%)
  • Retail Trade (115 people or 10.4%)

In combination, these three industries employed 405 people in total or 36.5% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Culburra Beach - Orient Point employed 13.3% in Construction; 9.2% in Accommodation and Food Services; and 7.4% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Coastal South and Culburra Beach - Orient Point were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (4.4% compared to 1.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (10.4% compared to 16.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (6.8% compared to 10.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in public administration and safety (5.0% compared to 8.6%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Coastal South increased by 238 between 2006 and 2021.

The largest change in the jobs held by the resident population between 2006 and 2021 in Coastal South was for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+50 persons)
