For the overseas-born population, being able to find work and participate in the local economy is a very important step to settling into Australia. High employment can indicate an engaged migrant community, or perhaps a large contingent on work-sponsored visas. A high level of unemployment or low participation rate (the percentage of the population in the labour force) can indicate a community of recent migrants with difficulties adjusting to economic life in Australia, and in some cases with a reliance on government benefits.
Differences in employment status for the local overseas-born populations may be related to the age and length of time that population has been in Australia, and the reason for migration (eg. some people migrate specifically for employment, so unemployment would be expected to be low in this case).
Employment data should be looked at in conjunction with Age Structure and Qualification data for the recent arrivals.

The size of the City of Perth's labour force born overseas in 2021 was 10,862 people, of which 3,248 were employed part-time and 6,458 were full time workers.
Analysis of the employment status of the population born overseas (as a percentage of the labour force) in the City of Perth in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a lower proportion in employment, and a similar proportion unemployed. Overall, 93.7% of the labour force born overseas was employed and 3.4% unemployed, compared with 94.4% and 3.1% respectively for Australia.
The labour force participation rate refers to the proportion of the population over 15 years of age that was employed or actively looking for work.
Analysis of the labour force participation rate of the population born overseas in the City of Perth in 2021 shows that there was a higher proportion in the labour force (74.0%) compared with Australia (62.6%).
Emerging groups
Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people born overseas employed in the City of Perth showed an increase of 2,239 persons and the number unemployed showed a decrease of 118 persons. In the same period, the number of people born overseas in the labour force showed an increase of 1,869 persons, or 20.8%.
