The Number of Bedrooms in a dwelling is an indicator of the size of dwellings, and when combined with Dwelling Type information, provides insight into the role the City of Perth plays in the housing market for overseas-born populations.
For example, where migrant populations are mainly students, one bedroom and bedsitters may be dominant. Upgrader areas housing families could have larger separate dwellings, while smaller units may be common for downsizers among older migrant communities.

Analysis of the number of bedrooms in dwellings for people born overseas in the City of Perth in 2021 compared to City of Adelaide, shows that there was a higher proportion of people born overseas in dwellings with 1 and 2 bedrooms, and a lower proportion in dwellings with 4 or more bedrooms.
Overall, 73.3% of people born overseas were in 1 and 2 bedroom dwellings, and 3.2% in 4 or more bedroom dwellings, compared with 71.6% and 5.0% for City of Adelaide respectively.
The major differences between the number of bedrooms per dwelling for people born overseas in the City of Perth and the City of Adelaide were:
- A larger percentage of people in 0 or 1 bedrooms (21.4% compared to 19.8%)
- A smaller percentage of people in 4 bedrooms (2.4% compared to 3.8%)
