The Number of Bedrooms in a dwelling is an indicator of the size of dwellings, and when combined with Dwelling Type information, provides insight into the role the City of Perth plays in the housing market for different age groups.
For example, where people aged 18 to 24 are in the workforce, one bedroom and bedsitters may be dominant. Upgrader areas housing families could have larger separate dwellings, while smaller units may be common for downsizers among older migrant communities.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the number of bedrooms in dwellings for children aged 12 to 17 years in the City of Perth in 2021 compared to Greater Perth, shows that there was a higher proportion of children aged 12 to 17 years in dwellings with 2 bedrooms or less, and a lower proportion of dwellings with 4 or more bedrooms.
Overall, 35.7% of children aged 12 to 17 years were in dwellings with 2 bedrooms or less, and 10.6% in 4 or more bedroom dwellings, compared with 2.1% and 72.5% for Greater Perth respectively.
The major differences between the number of bedrooms per dwelling children aged 12 to 17 years in the City of Perth and Greater Perth were:
- A larger percentage of people in 2 bedrooms (33.3% compared to 1.9%)
- A larger percentage of people in 3 bedrooms (46.1% compared to 22.1%)
- A smaller percentage of people in 4 bedrooms (8.1% compared to 56.3%)
- A smaller percentage of people in 5 bedrooms or more (2.5% compared to 16.2%)
