Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Northern Tasmania Region in 2021 compared to Regional TAS shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 87.8% of the population used English only, and 7.1% used a non-English language, compared with 88.9% and 5.5% respectively for Regional TAS.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Northern Tasmania Region was Nepali, with 1.4% of the population, or 2,119 people using this language at home.

There were no major differences between Northern Tasmania Region and Regional TAS in 2021.

Emerging groups

Between 2006 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 6,890 or 177.0%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 8,719 or 7.0%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Northern Tasmania Region between 2006 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Nepali (+2,119 persons)
  • Mandarin (+898 persons)
  • Punjabi (+508 persons)
  • Urdu (+336 persons)
