Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Northern Tasmania Region in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (11,777 people or 17.3%)
  • Retail Trade (6,859 people or 10.1%)
  • Education and Training (5,967 people or 8.8%)

In combination, these three industries employed 24,603 people in total or 36.2% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Australia employed 14.5% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.1% in Retail Trade; and 8.8% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Northern Tasmania Region and Australia were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (6.6% compared to 2.3%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (17.3% compared to 14.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (4.3% compared to 7.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in public administration and safety (4.8% compared to 6.6%)

The number of employed people in Northern Tasmania Region increased by 11,026 between 2006 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2006 and 2021 in Northern Tasmania Region were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+5,238 persons)
  • Construction (+2,038 persons)
  • Manufacturing (-1,504 persons)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+1,254 persons)
