Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of Northern Tasmania Region in 2021 compared to West Tamar Council area shows that there was a lower proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a lower proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.3% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 21.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.1% and 22.7% respectively for West Tamar Council area.

The major differences between the male age structure of Northern Tasmania Region and West Tamar Council area were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 25 to 29 (7.0% compared to 5.2%)
  • A larger percentage of males aged 20 to 24 (5.9% compared to 5.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 65 to 69 (6.5% compared to 7.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 5 to 9 (5.8% compared to 6.4%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Northern Tasmania Region's male population increased by 5,564 people (8.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.57% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 25 to 29 (+1,512 males)
  • 30 to 34 (+951 males)
  • 70 to 74 (+908 males)
  • 75 to 79 (+735 males)
