Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in the City of Newcastle in 2021 compared to Regional NSW shows that there was a similar proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a similar proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 24.8% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 10.6% were one-parent families, compared with 24.8% and 10.9% respectively for Regional NSW.

There were a higher proportion of lone person households and a lower proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 28.3% compared to 26.1% in Regional NSW while the proportion of couples without children was 24.5% compared to 27.7% in Regional NSW.

Emerging groups

The number of households in City of Newcastle increased by 6,474 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in the City of Newcastle between 2016 and 2021 were:

  • Couples without children (+2,191 households)
  • Lone person (+2,000 households)
  • Couples with children (+1,107 households)
