Dominant groups
The size of the City of Merri-bek's Chinese languages speaking labour force in 2021 was 2,448 persons, of which 745 were employed part-time and 1,414 were full time workers.
Analysis of the employment status (as a percentage of the labour force) of Chinese languages speakers in the City of Merri-bek in 2021 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a higher proportion in employment, and a similar proportion unemployed. Overall, 94.0% of the Chinese languages speaking labour force was employed, and 3.0% unemployed, compared with 92.6% and 3.4% respectively for Greater Melbourne.
Analysis of the Chinese languages speaking labour force participation rate of the population in the City of Merri-bek in 2021 shows that there was a higher proportion in the labour force (68.1%) compared with Greater Melbourne (62.1%).
Emerging groups
Between 2016 and 2021, the number of Chinese languages speaking population employed in the City of Merri-bek showed an increase of 216 people and the number unemployed showed a decrease of 64 people. In the same period, the number of people in the labour force showed an increase of 65 people, or 2.7%.
