Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken at home by children aged 12 to 17 years in Manningham City Council in 2021 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a larger proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 63.9% of children aged 12 to 17 years spoke English only, and 33.8% of% spoke a non-English language, compared with 68.3% and 27.4% respectively for Greater Melbourne.

Other than English, the dominant language spoken at home by children aged 12 to 17 years in Manningham City Council was Mandarin, with 10.5% of the population, or 931 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for children aged 12 to 17 years of the City of Manningham and Greater Melbourne in 2021 were:
