Austral's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Austral in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (346 females or 24.7%)
- Education and Training (176 females or 12.5%)
- Retail Trade (144 females or 10.3%)
In combination, these three industries employed 666 females in total or 47.5% of the total employed female resident population.
In comparison, Western area - Greendale and Surrounds employed 12.9% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 14.6% in Education and Training; and 10.9% in Retail Trade.
The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Austral and Western area - Greendale and Surrounds were:
- A larger percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (24.7% compared to 12.9%)
- A larger percentage of females employed in financial and insurance services (5.7% compared to 2.3%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (1.6% compared to 7.8%)
- A smaller percentage of females employed in construction (4.6% compared to 8.2%)

The number of employed females in Austral increased by 890 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Austral were for those employed in:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+281 females)
- Education and Training (+123 females)
- Financial and Insurance Services (+77 females)
- Retail Trade (+62 females)
