Ancestry
The three largest ancestries in Light Regional Council in 2021 were English, Australian and German.
Ancestry defines the cultural association and ethnic background of an individual going back three generations. Ancestry is a good measure of the total size of cultural groups in Light Regional Council regardless of where they were born or what language they speak.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the ancestry responses of the population in Light Regional Council in 2021 shows that the top five ancestries nominated were:
- English (7,149 people or 45.3%)
- Australian (6,911 people or 43.8%)
- German (2,299 people or 14.6%)
- Scottish (1,405 people or 8.9%)
- Irish (1,267 people or 8.0%)

The major differences between the ancestries of the population in Light Regional Council and Hewett were:
