The Number of Bedrooms in a dwelling is an indicator of the size of dwellings, and when combined with Dwelling Type information, provides insight into the role the Inner West Council plays in the housing market.
For low income households, affordability may be an issue, and it may be that households can only afford to occupy (rent or buy) relatively small dwellings. However, this is also related to Household Size - low incomes are often associated with 1 or 2 person households, particularly retirees and students, so number of bedrooms data should be viewed in conjunction with Household Type data to get an indication of whether particular housing sizes indicate the presence of overcrowding and housing affordability issues.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the number of bedrooms in dwellings for low income households in Inner West Council in 2021 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a higher proportion of households in dwellings with 2 bedrooms or less, and a lower proportion in dwellings with 4 or more bedrooms.
Overall, 60.8% of low income households were in dwellings with 2 bedrooms or less and 9.7% in 4 or more bedroom dwellings, compared with 42.1% and 20.9% for Greater Sydney respectively.
The major differences between the number of bedrooms per dwelling for low income households in the Inner West Council and Greater Sydney were:
- A larger percentage of households in 2 bedrooms (38.9% compared to 29.2%)
- A larger percentage of households in 0 or 1 bedrooms (21.9% compared to 12.9%)
- A smaller percentage of households in 4 bedrooms (7.6% compared to 16.7%)
- A smaller percentage of households in 3 bedrooms (28.1% compared to 35.5%)
Emerging groups
The largest changes in the number of bedrooms per dwelling for low income households in the Inner West Council between 2011 and 2021 were:
- 2 bedrooms (-506 households)
- 3 bedrooms (-409 households)
- 4 bedrooms (-65 households)
