In 2021, 14,463 people (or 5.4% of the population) in St George Region reported needing help in their day-to-day lives due to disability. This was a percentage increase from 2011.

St George Region's disability statistics relate directly to need for assistance due to a severe or profound disability. Dominant groups

Analysis of the need for assistance of people in Georges River Council compared to Oatley shows that there was a higher proportion of people who reported needing assistance with core activities.

Overall, 5.4% of the population reported needing assistance with core activities, compared with 3.7% for Oatley.

The major differences in the age groups reporting a need for assistance in St George Region and Oatley were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 85 and over (49.9% compared to 36.3%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 80 to 84 (32.7% compared to 19.8%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 75 to 79 (20.4% compared to 12.1%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (12.5% compared to 5.2%)

Emerging groups

The major differences in the age groups reporting a need for assistance between 2011 and 2021 in St George Region were in the age groups:
