The G21 Region's household and family structure is one of the most important demographic indicators.
People form different types of households at different stages in life, so this varies enormously by age group in all areas. This topic is useful, however, in comparing the types of households formed by each age group relative to the benchmark. For instance, in some areas, children may mostly live in couple families, while in others they are mainly in one-parent families. Are elderly parents still living with their extended family or do they have empty nester households?

Dominant groups
Analysis of the household/family types of people aged 65 years or more in the G21 Region in 2021 compared to Regional VIC, shows that there was a higher proportion of people aged 65 years or more in couple families with child(ren) as well as a similar proportion in one-parent families. Overall, 8.0% of people aged 65 years or more were in couple families with child(ren), and 4.9% were in one-parent families, compared with 6.8% and 4.7% respectively for Regional VIC.
There was a lower proportion of people aged 65 years or more in lone person households and a higher proportion in couples without children. Overall, the proportion of people aged 65 years or more in lone person households was 26.1% compared to 27.2% in Regional VIC while the proportion of couples without children was 54.2% compared to 53.4% in Regional VIC.
Emerging groups
The number of people aged 65 years or more in households in G21 Region increased by 14,989 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in family/household types for people aged 65 years or more in G21 Region between 2016 and 2021 were:
- Couples without children (+9,006 persons)
- Lone person (+3,308 persons)
- Couples with children (+1,366 persons)
- One parent families (+693 persons)
