People form different types of households at different stages in life, so this varies enormously by age group in all areas. This topic is useful, however, in comparing the types of households formed by each age group relative to the benchmark. For instance, in some areas, children may mostly live in couple families, while in others they are mainly in one-parent families. Are elderly parents still living with their extended family or do they have empty nester households?

Dominant groups
Analysis of the household/family types of people aged 80 years or more in the G21 Region in 2021 compared to the total population in the G21 Region, shows that there was a lower proportion of people aged 80 years or more in couple families with child(ren) as well as a lower proportion in one-parent families. Overall, 4.9% of people aged 80 years or more were in couple families with child(ren), and 7.0% were in one-parent families, compared with 45.7% and 11.4% respectively for the total population in the G21 Region.
There was a higher proportion of people aged 80 years or more in lone person households and a higher proportion in couples without children. Overall, the proportion of people aged 80 years or more in lone person households was 38.8% compared to 11.0% in the total population in the G21 Region while the proportion of couples without children was 44.0% compared to 23.1% in the total population in the G21 Region.
Emerging groups
The number of people aged 80 years or more in households in G21 Region increased by 2,283 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in family/household types for people aged 80 years or more in G21 Region between 2016 and 2021 were:
- Couples without children (+1,429 persons)
- Lone person (+617 persons)
- Couples with children (+166 persons)
- One parent families (+99 persons)
