Industry sector of employment

More South East Queensland male residents worked in construction than any other industry in 2021.

South East Queensland's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in South East Queensland in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (146,128 males or 15.7%)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (77,077 males or 8.3%)
  • Manufacturing (76,001 males or 8.2%)

In combination, these three industries employed 299,206 males in total or 32.2% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Noosa Shire Council employed 19.1% in Construction; 7.6% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; and 5.3% in Manufacturing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of South East Queensland and Noosa Shire Council were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in transport, postal and warehousing (7.1% compared to 3.9%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in manufacturing (8.2% compared to 5.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in accommodation and food services (6.3% compared to 10.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in construction (15.7% compared to 19.1%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in South East Queensland increased by 115,019 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in South East Queensland were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+19,488 males)
  • Construction (+17,690 males)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+15,729 males)
  • Retail Trade (+7,829 males)
