Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in South East Queensland was 35 to 39 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2006 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 45,081 people.

The Age Structure of South East Queensland provides key insights into the level of demand for age based services and facilities such as child care. It is also an indicator of South East Queensland's residential role and function and how it is likely to change in the future.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the female five year age groups of South East Queensland in 2021 compared to Greater Brisbane shows that there was a lower proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.8% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 17.3% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.4% and 15.6% respectively for Greater Brisbane.

There were no major differences between South East Queensland and Greater Brisbane in 2021.

Emerging groups

From 2006 to 2021, South East Queensland's female population increased by 512,665 people (36.4%). This represents an average annual population change of 2.09% per year over the period.

The largest changes in female age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 70 to 74 (+45,081 females)
  • 65 to 69 (+42,475 females)
  • 25 to 29 (+41,782 females)
  • 60 to 64 (+39,014 females)
