Dominant groups
Analysis of the family blending in South East Queensland in 2021 compared to Sunshine Coast Council shows that there was a lower proportion of step families as well as a lower proportion of blended families. Overall, 10.1% of total couple families with children were step families, and 4.2% were blended families, compared with 11.5% and 4.0% respectively for Sunshine Coast Council.
There were a similar proportion of other families and a higher proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of other families was 0.5% compared to 0.5% in Sunshine Coast Council while the proportion of intact families was 85.2% compared to 84.1% in Sunshine Coast Council.
Emerging groups
The number of couple families with children in South East Queensland increased by 44,726 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in family blending in South East Queensland between 2016 and 2021 were:
- Intact Family (+29,948 couples with children)
- Step family (+13,885 couples with children)
- Blended family (+599 couples with children)
- Other couple family (+294 couples with children)
