More Mountains and Valleys residents worked in construction than any other industry in 2021.

This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Mountains and Valleys in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (489 people or 12.0%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (477 people or 11.7%)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (416 people or 10.2%)

In combination, these three industries employed 1,382 people in total or 34.0% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Terrigal - North Avoca employed 10.8% in Construction; 18.3% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 0.4% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Mountains and Valleys and Terrigal - North Avoca were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (10.2% compared to 0.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (11.7% compared to 18.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (1.9% compared to 4.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (8.1% compared to 10.6%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Mountains and Valleys increased by 187 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Mountains and Valleys were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+87 persons)
  • Education and Training (+51 persons)
