In 2021, the largest age group in the Coastal District was 10 to 14 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2001 was 60 to 64 year olds, increasing by 617 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the male five year age groups of the Coastal District in 2021 compared to the Valleys District shows that there was a higher proportion of males in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a higher proportion of males in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 20.5% of the male population was aged between 0 and 15, and 19.0% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.9% and 17.9% respectively for the Valleys District.

The major differences between the male age structure of the Coastal District and the Valleys District were:

  • A larger percentage of males aged 0 to 4 (5.4% compared to 4.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 55 to 59 (6.6% compared to 8.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 60 to 64 (6.5% compared to 7.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of males aged 50 to 54 (7.3% compared to 8.2%)

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, Coastal District's male population increased by 3,159 people (21.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.96% per year over the period.

The largest changes in male age structure in this area between 2001 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 60 to 64 (+617 males)
  • 70 to 74 (+535 males)
  • 65 to 69 (+480 males)
  • 55 to 59 (+472 males)
