The three largest ancestries in Northern Lakes District in 2016 were English, Australian and Irish.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the ancestry responses of the population in Northern Lakes District in 2016 shows that the top five ancestries nominated were:
- English (7,537 people or 45.7%)
- Australian (7,333 people or 44.5%)
- Irish (2,075 people or 12.6%)
- Scottish (1,667 people or 10.1%)
- German (589 people or 3.6%)
In combination these five ancestries account for 19,201 responses in total, or 116.48% of all responses.
The major differences between the ancestries of the population in Northern Lakes District and Kariong were:
