More Western Region female residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the female resident population in Western Region in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (4,726 females or 26.1%)
  • Education and Training (2,441 females or 13.5%)
  • Retail Trade (2,241 females or 12.4%)

In combination, these three industries employed 9,408 females in total or 51.9% of the total employed female resident population.

In comparison, Cardinia Shire employed 23.8% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 13.4% in Education and Training; and 11.8% in Retail Trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the female population of Western Region and Cardinia Shire were:

  • A larger percentage of females employed in health care and social assistance (26.1% compared to 23.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of females employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (0.5% compared to 1.9%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed females in Western Region increased by 5,416 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the female resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Western Region were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+1,919 females)
  • Education and Training (+915 females)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+336 females)
  • Retail Trade (+305 females)
