In 2021, the largest age group in Eastern Region was 55 to 59 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 60 to 64 year olds, increasing by 175 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Eastern Region in 2021 compared to South East Metropolitan Region shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 19.9% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 16.7% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 19.1% and 14.2% respectively for South East Metropolitan Region.

The major differences between the age structure of Eastern Region and South East Metropolitan Region were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 55 to 59 (7.7% compared to 5.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (5.3% compared to 7.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 35 to 39 (6.0% compared to 8.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (5.8% compared to 8.2%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Eastern Region's population increased by 1,331 people (16.6%). This represents an average annual population change of 3.12% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 60 to 64 (+175 persons)
  • 30 to 34 (+168 persons)
  • 35 to 39 (+143 persons)
  • 25 to 29 (+126 persons)
