Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Minto in 2021 compared to Blair Athol shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 41.7% of the population used English only, and 50.8% used a non-English language, compared with 46.7% and 49.0% respectively for Blair Athol.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Minto was Bengali, with 12.6% of the population, or 1,758 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Minto and Blair Athol in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Bengali at home (12.6% compared to 2.1%)
  • A larger percentage using Nepali at home (5.7% compared to 0.7%)
  • A smaller percentage using Filipino/Tagalog at home (2.9% compared to 8.6%)
  • A smaller percentage using Arabic at home (3.4% compared to 6.3%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 1,163 or 19.7%, and the number of people who used English only decreased by 215 or 3.6%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Minto between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Bengali (+475 persons)
  • Nepali (+404 persons)
  • Punjabi (+164 persons)
  • Urdu (+149 persons)
