Need for assistance - Introduction

In 2016, there were 6,941 people with a need for assistance living in Cairns.

People with a disability are an important and sometimes disadvantaged population group often in need of specific services provided by local and state government. Their living arrangements may differ markedly from the rest of the population.

Information is collected in each Census about respondent’s “need for assistance” with either “self-care”, “body movement” or “communication” activities (very young children who obviously require this assistance due only to their age are filtered out of the data before release).

Generally, however, information is not available directly from the Census on the type of assistance available, so the only information produced from the Census is whether or not a person needs assistance. The main value of this comes from cross-classifying with other characteristics of those needing assistance, which is provided in this profile. See the topic list below for details.

Derived from the Census questions:

'Does the person ever need someone to help with, or be with them for, self care activities?', 'Does the person ever need someone to help with, or be with them for, body movement activities?', 'Does the person ever need someone to help with, or be with them for, communication activities?', and 'What are the reasons for the need for assistance or supervision shown in questions 20, 21 and 22?' (as per above).
