Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Kew in 2021 compared to Maranoa Ward shows that there was a larger proportion of people who used English only, and a smaller proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 70.3% of the population used English only, and 26.3% used a non-English language, compared with 48.3% and 49.0% respectively for Maranoa Ward.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Kew was Mandarin, with 8.6% of the population, or 2,115 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Kew and Maranoa Ward in 2021 were:

  • A smaller percentage using Mandarin at home (8.6% compared to 22.7%)
  • A smaller percentage using Cantonese at home (2.8% compared to 7.2%)
  • A smaller percentage using Hindi at home (0.6% compared to 1.6%)

Emerging groups

Between 2001 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 2,212 or 52.2%, and the number of people who used English only decreased by 180 or 1.0%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Kew between 2001 and 2021 were for those using:
