More Canterbury residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Canterbury in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (630 people or 17.4%)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (575 people or 15.8%)
- Education and Training (356 people or 9.8%)
In combination, these three industries employed 1,561 people in total or 43.0% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, Kew East employed 16.6% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 14.0% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; and 10.8% in Education and Training.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Canterbury and Kew East were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (15.8% compared to 14.0%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in retail trade (9.6% compared to 8.2%)
