Dominant groups
Analysis of the ancestry responses of the population in Mascot in 2021 shows that the top five ancestries nominated were:
- Chinese (5,755 people or 26.7%)
- English (2,830 people or 13.1%)
- Australian (2,415 people or 11.2%)
- Indonesian (1,532 people or 7.1%)
- Irish (1,503 people or 7.0%)
In combination these five ancestries account for 14,035 responses in total, or 65.02% of all responses.
The major differences between the ancestries of the population in Mascot and Wolli Creek - Bonar Street Precinct were:
- A larger percentage of people with Indonesian ancestry (7.1% compared to 2.8%)
- A larger percentage of people with Australian ancestry (11.2% compared to 6.9%)
- A larger percentage of people with Irish ancestry (7.0% compared to 3.1%)
- A smaller percentage of people with Chinese ancestry (26.7% compared to 33.0%)

The largest changes in the reported ancestries of the population in this area between 2016 and 2021 were:
