Dominant groups

Analysis of the female service age groups of Greater Adelaide in 2021 compared to Regional Australia shows that there was a lower proportion of females in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) as well as a lower proportion of females in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 19.5% of the female population was aged between 0 and 17, and 26.2% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 20.7% and 28.4% respectively for Regional Australia.

The major differences between the female age structure of Greater Adelaide and Regional Australia were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Young workforce' (13.7% compared to 12.0%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Tertiary education & independence' (8.5% compared to 7.3%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Parents and homebuilders' (19.5% compared to 18.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Empty nesters and retirees' (11.6% compared to 13.1%)

Emerging groups

From 2001 to 2021, Greater Adelaide's female population increased by 135,168 people (23.6%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.07% per year over the period.
