Dominant groups
Analysis of the male service age groups of South East Queensland in 2021 compared to Canberra shows that there was a higher proportion of males in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) as well as a higher proportion of males in the older age groups (60+ years).
Overall, 23.5% of the male population was aged between 0 and 17, and 20.6% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 22.4% and 17.2% respectively for Canberra.
The major differences between the male age structure of South East Queensland and Canberra were:
- A larger percentage of 'Seniors' (9.2% compared to 7.5%)
- A larger percentage of 'Empty nesters and retirees' (10.0% compared to 8.4%)
- A smaller percentage of 'Young workforce' (14.1% compared to 17.2%)
- A smaller percentage of 'Parents and homebuilders' (20.5% compared to 21.8%)
Emerging groups
From 2006 to 2021, South East Queensland's male population increased by 440,220 people (33.5%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.94% per year over the period.
The largest changes in the male age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- Parents and homebuilders (35 to 49) (+75,254 males)
- Seniors (70 to 84) (+73,533 males)
- Young workforce (25 to 34) (+65,476 males)
- Empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69) (+62,277 males)
