Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Greater Melbourne in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (193,715 males or 15.2%)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (130,843 males or 10.3%)
  • Manufacturing (114,507 males or 9.0%)

In combination, these three industries employed 439,065 males in total or 34.5% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Australia employed 14.7% in Construction; 8.3% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; and 8.1% in Manufacturing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Greater Melbourne and Australia were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in professional, scientific and technical services (10.3% compared to 8.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in mining (0.3% compared to 2.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (0.7% compared to 3.1%)
