Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Greater Capital Cities in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (1,140,310 people or 14.2%)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (747,868 people or 9.3%)
- Retail Trade (730,458 people or 9.1%)
In combination, these three industries employed 2,618,636 people in total or 32.6% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, Regional TAS employed 16.0% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 3.9% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; and 9.8% in Retail Trade.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Greater Capital Cities and Regional TAS were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (9.3% compared to 3.9%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (4.7% compared to 1.6%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (0.7% compared to 8.1%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (14.2% compared to 16.0%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed people in Greater Capital Cities increased by 2,120,867 between 2006 and 2021.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2006 and 2021 in Greater Capital Cities were for those employed in:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+518,597 persons)
- Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+279,560 persons)
- Education and Training (+256,203 persons)
- Construction (+252,572 persons)
