Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Greater Capital Cities in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (590,905 males or 14.2%)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (416,384 males or 10.0%)
  • Manufacturing (334,987 males or 8.1%)

In combination, these three industries employed 1,342,276 males in total or 32.3% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Regional VIC employed 17.2% in Construction; 4.4% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; and 10.5% in Manufacturing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Greater Capital Cities and Regional VIC were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in professional, scientific and technical services (10.0% compared to 4.4%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in financial and insurance services (4.6% compared to 1.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (0.8% compared to 9.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in construction (14.2% compared to 17.2%)

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Greater Capital Cities were for those employed in:

  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+71,984 males)
  • Construction (+67,101 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+66,856 males)
  • Financial and Insurance Services (+29,944 males)
