Dominant groups
Analysis of the five year age groups of Regional TAS in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 16.6% of the population was aged between 0 and 15, and 22.2% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 18.2% and 17.2% respectively for Australia.
The major differences between the age structure of Regional TAS and Australia were:
- A larger percentage of persons aged 65 to 69 (6.7% compared to 5.1%)
- A larger percentage of persons aged 60 to 64 (7.4% compared to 5.8%)
- A larger percentage of persons aged 70 to 74 (6.1% compared to 4.6%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 35 to 39 (5.7% compared to 7.2%)
Emerging groups
From 1991 to 2021, Regional TAS's population increased by 40,358 people (15.1%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.47% per year over the period.
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 1991 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 60 to 64 (+11,413 persons)
- 70 to 74 (+10,785 persons)
- 65 to 69 (+10,571 persons)
- 55 to 59 (+10,517 persons)
