Dominant groups
Analysis of the female five year age groups of Tasmania in 2021 compared to South Australia shows that there was a similar proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a similar proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 15.9% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 21.7% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 16.3% and 21.3% respectively for South Australia.
The major differences between the female age structure of Tasmania and South Australia were:
- A larger percentage of females aged 60 to 64 (7.0% compared to 6.4%)
- A smaller percentage of females aged 20 to 24 (5.4% compared to 5.9%)
Emerging groups
From 2006 to 2021, Tasmania's female population increased by 41,122 people (16.9%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.05% per year over the period.
The largest changes in female age structure in this area between 2006 and 2021 were in the age groups:
- 70 to 74 (+7,669 females)
- 65 to 69 (+7,461 females)
- 60 to 64 (+6,978 females)
- 25 to 29 (+6,217 females)
