Five year age groups

In 2021, the largest age group in Regional Australia was 60 to 64 year olds. The group that changed the most since 2016 was 70 to 74 year olds, increasing by 53,463 people.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the female five year age groups of Regional Australia in 2021 compared to South East Queensland shows that there was a similar proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) and a higher proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 17.3% of the female population was aged between 0 and 15, and 21.6% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 17.7% and 17.0% respectively for South East Queensland.

The major differences between the female age structure of Regional Australia and South East Queensland were:

  • A larger percentage of females aged 65 to 69 (6.2% compared to 4.9%)
  • A larger percentage of females aged 60 to 64 (6.9% compared to 5.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 20 to 24 (5.2% compared to 6.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of females aged 35 to 39 (6.2% compared to 7.3%)

Emerging groups

From 2016 to 2021, Regional Australia's female population increased by 296,615 people (7.6%). This represents an average annual population change of 1.47% per year over the period.

The largest changes in female age structure in this area between 2016 and 2021 were in the age groups:

  • 70 to 74 (+53,463 females)
  • 60 to 64 (+34,951 females)
  • 35 to 39 (+34,487 females)
  • 75 to 79 (+33,944 females)
